Ukulele Chords - Learn To Play House Of The Rising Sun

In this ukulele lesson you will learn to play the chords to the popular song House Of The Rising Sun. You will use ukulele tabs to read the chords. I will first show you how to elaborate the tab notation.

These four lines is a visualization of the four strings on your ukulele. The top line represents the first string or the string with the top pitch. It is the lowest string on your uke when you hold it in playing position.

On these lines you will find numbers telling you which frets to press down in order to play the chords. I will come back to this in a moment.

The chord names we will use are based on the assumption that your uke is tuned in C. This means that your strings are tuned in the following manner:

First string: A

Second string: E

Third string: C

Fourth string: G

The first chord you will learn is the A-minor chord. I looks as follows with ukulele tabs:

---0---

---0---

---0---

---2---

The whole two tells you to press down the second fret on the fourth string. I recommend that you use your left hand middle finger to press down the fret.

The whole 0 on the other strings means that you play them without pressing down any frets. Try to strum the chord. We will need a few more chords to play the first line with lyrics. First the C-major chord:

---3---

---0---

---0---

---0---

I recommend that you use your left hand ring finger to press down the third fret on the first string.

Here is the D-major chord:

---0---

---2---

---2---

---2---

This chord is a exiguous bit tricky to play as the notes to press down is on the same fret. I recommend that you play the note on the fourth string with your index, the third string with your middle finger and the second string with your ring finger.

Here is the F-major chord:

---0---

---1---

---0---

---2---

With common chord notation the chords you have learn so far will look like this played in order:

Am C D F

I will put these chords in brackets immediately before the syllable where you are to play them.

Now it is time to sing and play the first line of the song House Of The Rising Sun:

There (Am)is a (C)house in (D)New Or(F)leans

For the next line you will need the chord E7:

---2---

---0---

---2--

---1---

A recommend fingering for the strings is:

Fourth string: index

Third string: middle finger

First string: ring finger

Let us continue with the song:

They (Am)call the (C)Rising (E7)Sun

And it's (Am)been the (C)ruin of (D)many a poor (F)boy

And (Am)God I (E7)know I'm (Am)one (E7)

There are a few more verses. Search for House Of The Rising Sun Lyrics on the net for additional verses.

The cool intro to the Animals version of the song can be play by strumming the chords six times each in the following order:

Am C D F Am E7 Am E7
