Ukulele - Hawaii's Most famed Musical Instrument

Ukelele ( spelled ukelele in the Uk, abbreviated to uke; pronounced yoo-kuh-ley-lee [American English] or oo-koo-ley-ley [original Hawaiian]) is a small, guitar-like lute with four to ten strings. Developed in the 1880s, the ukulele is the Hawaiian interpretation of the Portuguese braguinha.

Hawaii's most illustrious musical instrument produces big tone and sweet sound. Ukuleles normally come in 4 sizes: Soprano (or what Hawaiians refer to as proper size), Concert, Tenor , and Baritone. The Solid Body Cutaway is a more recent innovation.

Ukulele

Ukuleles are typically made of wood, although there are some models made of plastic or a composite of plastic and wood. Expensive models are made from hardwood (e.g.mahogany, kulawood, spruce, and sequoia), the most Expensive of which are made from koa tree.

A typical ukulele has a figure 8 shape like that of a small acoustic guitar. There are also other spicy shape variations such as oval (called pineapple ukulele), boat paddle, and quadrate (usually made from an old wooden cigar box).

History

Ukulele was brought to the Hawaiians by Portuguese immigrants. To celebrate their arrival on August 23, 1879, Joao Fernandes played Portuguese folk songs on the wharf using a braguinha borrowed from a friend. Hawaiians who witnessed him on the dock where so impressed not only with his music, but also with the speed of his fingers: it seemed like they danced over the fingerboard. Hence, they called the instrument "ukulele," meaning "jumping flea."

(Queen Lili'uokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii, gave a dissimilar version to the origins of "ukulele". She notion ukulele meant "the gift that came here," from uku meaning "the gift" and lele meaning "to come.")

There were 419 immigrants aboard the ship Ravenscrag, but three people would be the first to produce ukulele shops. They were Manuel Nunes, Augustine Dias, and Joao Fernandes.

Within 10 years after the arrival of the Portuguese, the ukulele became Hawaii's most favorite instrument. It is said that Joao Fernandes was a key behind this, as he spent a lot of time playing colse to Honolulu with his instrument.

Ukelele: A royal endorsement

It was also from Fernandes that King Kalakaua first heard

the music from the ukulele, but he learned to play it from Augusto Diaz. He encouraged that it was played while royal gatherings. A patron of arts,  King Kalakaua's enthusiasm over ukulele made it more proper to people of Hawaii. It was played by Hawaiian from all walks of life--- from taro farmers to fishermen to royalties. Other royalties who learned how to play included Queen Emma, Queen Lili'uokalani, Prince Leleihoku, and Princess Likelike.

In 1915, ukulele's popularity moved to the mainland starting in San Francisco while the Panama Pacific International Exposition. As a result, ukulele sales increased. In addition to its sweet sound,

From Us the mainland, ukulele moved to the Uk and to the rest of the world. The ukulele even became an icon of the Jazz Age.

Ukulele Tab - Learn To Play spectacular, Grace

Do you know that you can play melodies on your ukulele? amazing Grace is a beloved christian hymn. It doesn't contain many notes and it is quite easy to play on ukulele with the help of ukulele tab notation. Let's learn amazing Grace!

Here is the lyrics to the first verse:

Ukulele

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost, but now am found

Was blind, but now I see

We will start this ukulele chapter by introducing an ukulele tab notation favorable for report sites.

If you want to play with the help of the more common ukulele tab staff notation you are welcome to visit my site.

An ukulele can be tuned in many ways. I usually tune my ukulele this way:

G C E A

This tuning is very common and is called C-tuning. A is on the first string with the highest pitch.
Look at this ukulele tab example:

1/2

The first estimate indicates the fret to press down. The estimate after the slash tells you which string to play.

In other words, press down the first fret on the second string. Play the note with your right hand thumb, for example.

We will start by playing the first part of the melody with these lyrics:

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound

0/3 1/2 0/1 1/2 0/1 3/2 1/2 2/3 0/3

This ukulele tab notation doesn't indicate the rhythm of the song. As you know the melody and maybe can sing it I guess you will feel how long the notes should be.

Let's continue with the next part of the melody and the song lyrics:

That saved a wretch like me

0/3 1/2 0/1 1/2 0/1 3/2 0/1 3/1

What fingers should you use with your left hand? Well, it's a limited bit up to you, of course!

However, I advise that you use your first finger for the notes on the first fret, the middle finger for the notes on the second fret and, you guessed right!, the ring finger for the notes on the third fret.

These fingerings will help you as you play in many ways. With one finger taking care of one fret each you will not have to look at your fingers as much as you will feel your way around on the fretboard better.

Another suspect is that you can keep your hand in the same position as you only need to move your fingers and not your left hand. This will help you a lot when you start to play more difficult melodies.

Using your ring finger might feel awkward at first but with persistence you will get used to playing this way and you will advantage from it even when you play melodies on a guitar.

Let's look at the next ukulele tab:

I once was lost, but now am found

0/1 3/1 0/1 1/2 0/1 3/2 1/2 2/3 0/3

We will now unblemished this ukulele tab melody:

Was blind, but now I see

0/3 1/2 0/1 1/1 0/1 3/2 1/1

I hope you will enjoy playing this melody on your ukulele! I advise that you learn the melody by heart by practicing one limited part of the melody at a time.

Beginner Ukulele Chords Part 5 - How to Play an E Minor Chord

If you've been following our series of articles on beginner ukulele chords you'll already be able to play a estimate of chords: A minor, G, F and C. In this narrative we'll be giving you one more to add to your repertoire: E minor.

As you'll remember from our former narrative on the A minor chord, all minor chords need to comprise a note that is three frets above the chord note (also know as a minor third). With the chord note being E, the chord E minor must comprise the note G.

Ukulele

There are two ways you can play the E chord on the ukulele in the first position and we'll be taking a look at how to play both of them.

E Minor: choice One

The first version of the E minor chord we'll look at is the most coarse one and requires three fingers to play. Third finger - C string - 4th fret. Second finger - E string - 3rd fret. First finger - A string - 2nd fret.

The remaining string (G) should remain open to give you the first way of playing the Em chord.

E Minor Chord: Alternative Version

As you might have noticed, the first way of playing the Em chord has two G notes in it: at the third fret of the E string and the open G string.

For any chord, you only need to hear each note that makes it up once. So you can do away with the one on the E string and let that string ring open too (since the note E is obviously part of the Em chord).

This might string you as being an easier way to play the chord - since it takes one less finger to play - but that is not true.

Taking your finger off the E string will increase its height. This makes it much more likely that you will accidentally mute it with your ring finger. That's why the first inversion we covered is the more popular.
