Ukulele Songs - Five essential Uke Tunes

There are certain songs that will be forever associated with the ukulele. They're the songs that the general communal immediately link with the ukulele. The ones they request whenever man takes out a ukulele. The ones every ukulele player is almost contractually obliged to learn.

Many of these songs have come to be associated with the ukulele because of a single, great interpretation using the ukulele.

Ukulele

Tonight You Belong To Me

Tonight You Belong to Me was written in 1926 by Billy Rose and Lee David. It became illustrious after it was used in the movie The Jerk. It features in a scene on the beach with Steve Martin serenading Bernadette Peters with a ukulele. Although Steve Martin is a ukulele player, he mimed to the playing of Lyle Ritz.

Aloha 'Oe

Aloha Oe is one of the oldest ukulele songs. It was written by the Hawaiian Queen Lili'uokalani at the end of the 19th Century. The song was originally a love song but has come to be a farewell song because of its vocal refrain (aloha 'oe means 'farewell to you'). The song has recently come to be popular with children after being used in the cartoon Lilo and Stitch.

Ukulele Lady

In the 1920s, there was a huge fad for all things Hawaiian. Songwriters were quick to pick up on this trend and started writing songs in a Hawaiian style with references to assorted items of Hawaiiana. Obviously, this meant plentifulness of ukulele references in songs like Ukulele Moon, Ukulele Island and, most famously, Ukulele Lady.

Tip Toe straight through the Tulips

Tiny Tim is probably the most illustrious ukulele player of all time and Tip Toe straight through the Tulips his biggest hit. With his unconventional appearance and strange, warbling voice, he wasn't the most ambassador for the ukulele. However, he did saving a whole of great songs from the 1920s from obscurity.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

There were hardly any ukulele versions of Somewhere Over the Rainbow before Israel Kamakawiwo'ole recorded his version of the song in 1997. His version had such charm and beauty that it became a huge success and is ordinarily featured in films and Tv shows set in Hawaii such as 50 First Dates. More recently, the song was covered by Jason Castro on American Idol to thumbs up from the judges and the audience alike.

Ukulele Tab: Learn To Play Happy Birthday To You

An ukulele can be used to play chords when you sing but you can also play melodies. It's fun and quite easy to learn melodies on your uke with ukulele tab. Let's learn to play Happy Birthday To You!

As many population know "Happy Birthday to You" is a song which is sung to celebrate a person's birth. Agreeing to the Guinness Book of World Records, "Happy Birthday to You" is the most popular song in the English language.

Ukulele

Here is the most coarse lyrics. "Peter" is to be supplanted by the name of the celebrating person.

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday dear "Peter",

Happy birthday to you.

I use my own form of ukulele tab for articles like this to be sure that the tabs are readable on record sites. The more coarse ukulele tab staff notation can be found on my site with ukulele tabs and free sheet music.

The string with the highest pitch is commonly an A and is called the first string. The first string is the string nearest your feet when you play your uke.

The first notes in the song are on the third string.

The first amount indicates the fret. The second amount after the slash tells you which string to play. Here is the first line of lyrics and the ukulele tab:

Happy birthday to you,

0/3 0/3 2/3 0/3 1/2 0/2

0/3 indicates that you play the third string with your right hand thumb for example without pressing down any left hand finger. It is called to play on the open third string.

This type of ukulele tab doesn't indicate the distance of the notes. I guess you hear that the first two notes are short and the last note long.

Let's play the next line:

Happy birthday to you,

0/3 0/3 2/3 0/3 3/2 1/2

3/2 means that you press down a left hand finger on the third fret of the second string. I haven't told you whatever about which left hand finger to press down on the frets on your ukulele.

You can use your first finger for all the notes but a more pro arrival is to play the notes on the first fret with your first finger, the notes on the second fret with your long finger and the notes on your third fret with your ring finger.

Maybe it's difficult at first but with practice it will be easier for you to find the right notes. You don't even have to look at your fingers to find the right fret if you get accustomed to this way of playing.

The next line comes now:

Happy birthday dear "Peter",

0/3 0/3 3/1 0/1 1/2 0/2 2/3

You know what the ukulele tab above tells you by now.

The last line comes here:

Happy birthday to you.

1/1 1/1 0/1 1/2 3/2 1/2

Now you can play Happy Birthday To You on your ukulele and you are prepared for the next birthday party!

Actually you can play this melody with the use of the above ukulele tab notation on a guitar also. The first three strings are tuned the same way but not in the same pitch.

The ukulele tab notation I have used is good for seeing the notes but I recommend you to learn the melody by heart so you can play it anytime and anywhere!

How to Tune a Tenor Ukulele

The tenor ukulele is becoming one of the most popular of the four sizes of ukulele (soprano, concert, tenor and baritone). Traditionally, it has been an instrument for skilled and experienced solo ukulele players (and is still the most popular ukulele amongst such people). However, with so many ukulele heroes playing the tenor ukulele, an expanding number of beginners starting with the tenor ukulele. This does generate some obscuring as there are a number of options for how to tune the tenor ukulele.

Re-Entrant C-Tuning

Ukulele

The re-entrant C (also called high-G sometimes) is the original way to tune the ukulele. The tuning is Gcea with the G string being higher than the C and E strings.

The C is the middle C of the piano.

The fourth fret of the C string will give you the note for the E string.

The third fret of the E string will give you the note for the G string.

The fifth fret of the E string will give you the note for the A string.

Low-G Tuning

This is slowly becoming the most popular tuning for the tenor ukulele. This tuning is also Gcea , but rather than being tuned high, the G string is tuned below the C string.

This gives the tenor ukulele more the feel of a guitar (the tuning of a low-G tenor ukulele is the same as the top four strings of a guitar capoed at the fifth fret). It gives the ukulele more options for playing bass notes: which can be very helpful when you are playing solo and need to contribute your own bass line accompaniment.

Re-Entrant D-Tuning

This is a relatively new tuning for the tenor ukulele. The Aquila enterprise make strings for the tenor uke that can be tuned Dgbe. This is the same as a guitar but with the D string tuned high (the same as the G string in the re-entrant C tuning).

Conclusion

When you decide which tuning is the best for you, you need to take into account your own style of playing. If you are mostly a strummer, re-entrant C will probably be the best choice for you. If you are more curious in solo playing, low-G might be the one for you.

Once you've decided how to tune it, make sure the tenor ukulele that you buy is set up for that tuning and duplicate check that you have bought the right size strings for your choice of tenor ukulele tuning.

Very Easy Ukulele Songs - Motivation For Beginners

I have only been playing ukulele for about the past 3 months and I learned a few number of songs. The strumming patterns is a tiny distinct but you can still hear the flow of the song. The songs that I learned was Airplanes, Drop Baby Drop, Ehu Girl, Count On Me, I'm Yours and some more that I can't name but it doesn't matter. If you think that it's hard studying ukulele, just see what kind of songs I have learned.

All you have to do is practice. Did you think it would be that easy to learn a song? It does take a tiny work but I might say, play at least 1 hour a day. Maybe less if you're busy. I might say that the easiest song I learned was Drop Baby Drop because the chords are pretty simple. All you just have to do is learn how to bar chord. Once you got that down you pretty much know the whole song. I will try to justify the strumming pattern for you. It's simple.

Ukulele

First learn the tempo by hearing the music on a site. You might honestly get the strumming down just by listening to the music. It is hard to justify but I'll try. Down, Scratched Down, Up Down Up Down and it repeats. Or something like that, it might be easier just searching the music at YouTube or any music site.

I guess you can say that this is a success story and it's telling you that you can do it do. But you can all you have to do is believe in yourself. Like I didn't think I could play when I first started but I looked nearby the internet and found easy songs. So look for easy songs and you might honestly get ahead and play harder songs. Go for it!

Ukulele lesson - Learn to Play Nearer, My God to Thee

Nearer, My God To Thee is quite easy to play on the ukulele! Now you will learn to play the melody and how to use your left hand fingers as you play.

Ukulele tablature

Ukulele

Here is a brief introduction to tab notation. A general tablature staff uses four lines representing the four strings on the uke and number on the lines indicating which fret to press down.

In this ukulele episode we will use someone else form of tab notation with numbers. Every note is represented with two numbers, the first telling you which fret to press down and the second which string to play. String number one is the first string with the highest pitch.

Time to start

We will start with the first part of the melody by presenting the lyrics. Below the lyrics you will find the ukulele tabs for the melody.

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

01 32 12 12 23 23 03 12 01 32

As mentioned before the first number in the pair tells you on what fret to play. The next number which string to use. 01 32 means, play the first open string and then the third fret of the second string.

Left hand fingering

In order to play the notes with minimal movement of the left hand I propose that you play the notes on the first fret with your left hand index finger, the notes on the second fret with your middle finger and so on.

Even if it is awkward at first you will soon get used to this type of fingerings. This will help you to play the notes without looking at the fretboard.

Learn the lines by heart

Probably the best way to learn the melody is by memorizing the lines one by one. Then you are not dependent on having the tabs on paper but can pick up an uke and play wherever you are. This is also the best way to learn the melody fast as you have to merge and make a aware effort to learn.

Here is the next line of lyrics with corresponding ukulele tabs:

E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me

01 32 12 12 23 23 03 12 02 32 12

What about the right hand?

In order to pluck the strings you can use your right hand thumb, a pick or for example alternate in the middle of the right hand index and middle finger.

People using the last coming ordinarily rest the finger on the adjacent string after having played a string. This means, if you pluck string number one with your index finger it will slide to the second string and rest there. This is called a reserve stroke and requires someone else report to expound fully!

Here comes line three:

Still all my song shall be nearer, my God, to Thee

32 01 32 32 02 32 32 01 32 32 02 23

What about the rhythms?

In this easy ukulele tab notation the actual distance of the notes are not indicated. Tablature notation often assumes that the reader are well-known with the notated melody but there are ways to notate even the period of the individual notes. However, this will make the tabs a little bit harder to read.

I assume that you know the melody and maybe you can sing the lines with lyrics to form out the precise melody!

...and here is the final line:

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

01 32 12 12 23 23 03 12 02 32 12

As mentioned before, I propose that you learn the melody by heart so you can have way to it whenever you have an ukulele at hand!

About Oscar Schmidt Musical Instruments
The Oscar Schmidt Company was founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1911. By the early 1900s, the company had five factories in Europe and a factory on Ferry Street in Jersey City. They made all kinds of stringed instruments, guitars, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, zithers, and Autoharps.

The company prospered through the early 1920s. Oscar Schmidt instruments were sold in many rural parts of the country where no music stores existed. Salesmen distributed the products far and wide, making them available in general, small town furniture and dry goods stores. Country guitar pickers and blues musicians living in areas of the South and in Appalachia, far from the city, frequently played Oscar Schmidt instruments because they were both inexpensive and available locally. But equally important, they were often chosen solely on merits of their superior tone and volume.

Today at Oscar Schmidt, premium woods, quality hardware and modest prices create an ideal instrument. Each is inspected and adjusted in the USA by a skilled technician, your assurance for smooth fret ends, precision low action and resonant sound quality. Unequalled standards in easy playing comfort and tone response creates the perfect value... Oscar Schmidt.

Ditch dinner and Try Some Alternative Entertainment in London

No one would argue that London's nightlife isn't vibrant and diverse, but few population realise just how diverse. Rather than partaking in the same old pubs, clubs, bars and discos, party-goers are seeking alternative entertainment in London and, as can be expected, the City is delivering.

Soho, which easily sets the trends when it comes to London's nightlife, was the natural choice for Bompas and Parr to test their newest alternative entertainment venture. Alcoholic Architecture is a pop-up bar with a difference. Rather than sipping your favourite cocktails, a faintly intoxicating alcoholic mix is delivered via a fine gin and tonic flavoured mist as soon as you walk in. Plastic suits are provided to cover your clothes and prevent you smelling as though you just emerged from a distillery explosion.

Unfortunately, the olfactory-centred bar was only temporary and lasted a mere four fun fume-filled nights, but as those nights proved to be very popular, maybe Bompas and Parr will bring it back on a more permanent basis.

Staying in Soho, karauke is taking London by storm. No, it's not a spelling mistake, 'Karauke' as opposed to the more traditional karaoke, is grand by a ukulele strumming backup band. From its humble beginnings as a spin-off from weekly Ukulele sessions at the Royal George Tavern in Soho, Karauke has come to be a popular source of alternative entertainment in its own right. It has come to be so popular in fact, that it now has its own weekly session at the Soho Revue Bar. On the third Thursday of each month you can make your way to the Revue Bar and enjoy the dulcet sounds of the 15 member Ukulele band accompanied by the less harmonic singing of whatever game enough to have a go. Once you've spent your nights singing to the tunes of a Ukulele band, it's hard to fantasize going back to whatever that doesn't smack of alternative entertainment in London.

Tea dancing. Yep, gone are the days of sewing circles and tea and scones. These days tea has a petite more zest as everybody from ambitious young professionals to retired grandmothers and grandfathers take to the dance floor in London's newly prosperous alternative form of entertainment. Tea dancing is everywhere; The Waldorf offers Tango Tea Dance once a month for £10 a pop and the Covent orchad dance Orchetra hosts a free afternoon tea dance on the last Friday of every month at Spitalfields Markets.

While strictly in the interests of fun, tea dancing, as one would expect from entertainment aimed primarily at (but easily not restricted to) the over-50s, tea dancing has some rules of etiquette:

o No stilettos, dancing is up tempo and requires the kind of flat moves and agility that is generally hampered by high heels

o Don't over-indulge, guests are allocated their share of tea and cake, and while tea is generally in abundant supply, cake is limited

o Dance in the same direction as everybody else, collisions are frowned upon as old bones tend to be frailer than young

o Don't get drunk, you're not at a pub or rowdy nightclub, if you're going to embrace the alternative entertainment scene in London then make sure you abide by its rules

o Always dance with a partner, gender makes no difference, so long as you're bopping, no one cares

o Lastly, don't be too envious when those with the best moves are old enough to be your grandmother, they've had practice

And if you're tired of the dating scene, you can always ditch the clubs, pubs and bars and get down with speed hating. Speed hating takes the mickey out of speed dating and is the perfect form of alternative entertainment for the gloomier or maybe more gothic London dwellers. Alternative accurately sums up the entertainment provided by London's speed hating events, where everybody receives an uninspiring pseudonym before a round of 'Blind Hate' and unpleasant answers are conception up to unpleasant questions, such as 'in someone else life, which disease ridden vermin would you most likely be?'. To spice things up there is also a misfortune teller and Twister, which is played with the Grim Reaper. For one of the most alternative experiences of your life, shun the theatre, say no to exclusive party venues and hop on over to the Hammersmith side of London for your monthly dose of speed hating.

Sure, you can try the more traditional events and venues to occupy your nights - Shakespearian theatre, movies with the girls - or you can savour something different, something a petite more wonderful and sample some of the alternative entertainment that London has to offer.
