Ukulele Sizes Part 2 - The Concert Ukulele

Of all the sizes of ukulele, the concert ukulele is often the most overlooked. The terms for the other sizes of ukulele are familiar to other people: soprano, tenor and baritone. But concert is slightly different.

The two most common size of ukulele for population to play are tenor and soprano. Each of these offers players their own advantages and disadvantages. But the concert offers players the excellent compromise in the middle of these two.

Ukulele

Concert Ukulele: Definition

Like all the ukulele classifications, the concert ukulele is defined by its scale length (i.e. The playable length of its strings). It has a scale length of nearby fifteen inches. This places it exactly in the middle of the soprano ukulele (with a scale length of thirteen inches) and the tenor (with a scale length of seventeen inches).

What's Good About the Concert Size Uke?

The concert ukulele should bring you what most population love about the soprano and tenors all in one package. You get an extra bit of room for your fingers to maneuver; allowing you to play more involved single note parts (as with the tenor). And you also get the original ukulele sound of the soprano and it is as natural as the soprano when it comes to chord playing.

The adaptability is the major appeal of the concert ukulele for me. It allows me to switch in the middle of fingerstyle and strummed sections of a single piece without losing anything in the move in terms of sound and playability.

If you have tried playing a soprano ukulele but found you need a minuscule more space - as many population do - then the concert ukulele should be your next stop.

What are the Disadvantages of the Concert Ukulele?

There are some downsides to the concert ukulele. They tend not to be as available as tenors and in effect not sopranos. This means you are likely to have less choice when you buy than you might with the other sizes.

Another is the price. In the beginner price bracket, you won't find too many concert ukuleles.

Should I Get a Concert Ukulele?

Concert ukuleles are great for intermediate players who want to stretch out their ukulele playing and take on new challenges. Tantalizing their playing into new areas and taking on lead parts but still retaining the original sound of the ukulele.

Ukulele For Beginners - Which Ukulele Should You Buy As a Beginner?

So you've decided on which instrument to play. The Ukulele! Great choice! Now you're asking yourself which is the best ukulele for beginners? Buying your first ukulele depends on the type of man playing the ukulele.

Do you want to be surely good at the ukulele or will it be a hobby? Some population like to buy one for the beach and some like to play one at home. Do you want to have a surely good sounding ukulele that has great capability and made by a professional brand?

Ukulele

Sometimes it's good to have both, a ukulele that you play all the time which you don't mind taking to the beach (for example) and won't get too upset about if it gets damaged in some way (ie rocking out too hard!). So go for a cheap one here and then have a good capability ukulele at home or when performing for population which you'll only use at home or indoors where the likelihood of damage is very low.

There are different types of ukuleles but for the beginner it is best to start off with a small affordable 4-string ukulele and then you can work your way up the great you get as a uke player.

Some great brands include the Makala, Lanikai and Oscar Ukuleles. If you are buying a uke for a child then buy most basic plastic type and if they show genuine interest then upgrade to a beginner/standard ukulele

The Makala is great for absolute beginners as it's an affordable brand. Makala Ukuleles are also great for kids as they can come in pastel shades with dolphins on.

A little more higher up in price but marvelous for beginners are the Lanikai Ukuleles. If you plan on development playing the ukulele a serious hobby then maybe consider buying a more up-market ukulele like the Oscar.

Hopefully this record has steered you in the direction of which ukulele for beginners you feel will be best for you. Enjoy the uniqueness and delight you'll get with your new ukulele. It truly is a remarkable, fun and tantalizing instrument to play.

famed Ukulele Players

Did you know that Beatle George Harrison played the Ukulele proficiently? He is among the most celebrated of ukulele players. Others consist of Tessie O'Shea, Cliff Edwards, Bill 'Uke" Scott, Roy Smeck, and George Fornby.

The Ukulele is often related with Hawaii as it is often used to play that type of music. A ukulele looks like a small guitar and comes in many dissimilar styles. There is he tenor ukulele, the pono ukulele, the baratone ukulele, banjo ukulele and a baritone and soprano ukulele. Although the sound is similar to that of Hawaiian music, it is believed that the ukulele dates back hundreds of years and has roots in Portugal.

Ukulele

The Ukulele was first brought to the United States in 1915. celebrated ukulele players began using this instrument to play early forms of folk music. It has always been the beloved of folk musicians. In the United States, it really picked up with Vaudeville acts which featured Roy Smeck and Cliff Edwards. It was also very instrumental, no pun intended, in the jazz age.

Legendary ex-Beatle George Harrison had a great fondness for the ukulele and his last album, that was published after his death, featured him playing the banjo ukulele. Many of the songs on this album featured the Banjo Uke, which make many ukulele fans very happy.

George Formby was another celebrated ukulele player who played the banjo ukulele. He was the son of a celebrated musician who took over the act after his father died in 1925. When he incorporated the ukulele into his act, he became a raging success and entertained in the United Kingdom through Wwii. He was awarded and Obe in 1946 and prolonged performing with the ukulele until his death in 1961.

Tessie O'Shea was another celebrated ukulele player who also beloved the ukulele-banjo. Originally from England, she moved to the United States where she performed in films as well as on stage. She starred in musicals as well as a range of television shows. She was one of the few female celebrated ukulele players who is determined famous. Tessie O'Shea lived in Florida until her death in 1995.

Throughout the years, in Vaudeville, comedy, country music and even modern music, the ukulele has been prominent. It has a inescapable sound and is picked usually with the thumb or a felt pick. studying how to play the ukulele is no more difficult than studying how to play the guitar and most of the celebrated ukulele players were also like Harrison, perfect guitar players.

Although the banjo ukulele is among the most famous, other forms of this instrument each have a inescapable sound and are used throughout the world to accomplish a range of dissimilar types of music. In addition to honoring the celebrated musicians who were ukulele players, like George Harrison, there are also clubs devoted to this magical instrument that has been around for quite some time and has managed to bring a quality sound to many dissimilar types of music.

Ukulele Chords - Learn to Play White Christmas

In this ukulele episode you will learn to read easy tab notation. Even if you cannot read sheet music you will be able to read ukulele chords and melodies with this type of tabs. We will use the Christmas song White Christmas as a learning tool.

In sheet music you will find notes placed in a staff with five lines. The placement of the notes in the staff determines which note it is. However, the sheet music notation does not tell you how to play the note on your instrument, in this case, your ukulele. You will have to learn this by yourself.

Ukulele

Tablature notation, on the other hand, tells you how to place your fingers to play a melody or something else. Ukulele tabs show which frets to press down and which strings to play. As soon as you understand the ideas you can use it to play melodies and chords on your uke.

You can find a few separate types of tablature notation on the Internet. In this episode you will learn a form of ukulele tabs with numbers telling you which fret and string to play.

I suppose that you have tuned your ukulele in C. This means that you first string, that is the lowest string when you play, is tuned to an A, the second string is an E, the third string a C and the fourth string a G.

In the ukulele tab notation we will use all frets you are to press down on your ukulele is shown by two numbers. The first number tells you which fret to press down, the second number what string to play. Here is an example:

12 01

The first number pair tells you to press down the first fret on the second string. The second pair means that you shall play the first string without pressing down a fret. This is called to play an open string.

It is time to take a closer look at the song we will use to learn tab notation. I will write down the lyrics, one line at a time, and the ukulele chords you can use in the key of C-major:

(C)I'm dreaming of a (Dm)white (G7)Christmas

The song starts on the note 02 which is the note E if you want to sing the song. Here are the chords that I have written in brackets before the syllable where you are to play them:

C: 04 03 02 31

Dm: 24 23 12 01

G7: 04 23 12 21

Here are the next line:

(F)Just like the (Dm)ones I (G7)used to (C)know

The chord F-major can be played as follows:

F: 24 03 12 01

Where the (C)treetops (C7)glisten and (F)children (Fm)listen

The uke chords C7 and F-minor are played like this:

C7: 04 03 02 11

Fm: 14 03 12 31

The chord Fm is a wee bit tricky to play. Use your left hand index for string four, your middle finger for string two and your pinkie for the first string.

Here comes the last line of verse one:

To (C)hear (Am)sleigh bells in the (Fm)snow (G7)

The second verse starts with the same melody and the same chords:

(C)I'm dreaming of a (Dm)white (G7)Christmas

(F)With every (Dm)Christmas (G7)card I (C)write

Now comes a separate melody and new ukulele chords:

May your (C)days be (C7)merry and (F)bright (Fm)

And may (C)all (C#dim)your (Dm)Christma(G7)ses be (C)white

C#dim can be played:

C#dim: 04 13 02 11

I advise that you learn the song by memorizing one line at a time. The best way to learn to play the ukulele chords is to custom two adjacent chords at a time. custom changing between the chords smoothly by strumming once on every chord, repeating the course moderately until you can play the chords without looking. Then, move to the next chords!

How Movement in a Music Class Supports Higher studying for Children

If you knew

If you knew how to effectively retain learning and development...would you do it?

Ukulele

1 uncomplicated thing

If there was one uncomplicated thing you could do to improve your teaching I wonder if you would be willing to do it?

Integrate movement

Integrate movement in branch areas like music!

Music study is notoriously chair-based and to join movement...you have to get out of your chair! (Or off your bottom if you sit on the carpet)

A brain-based learning schedule allows for integration of all parts of your brain.

Brain-based learning must consist of movement.

Understand the brain

The simplest way to clarify the brain is this!

Imagine your brain has 3 levels.

1

Lower brain

(the reptilian brain...reflexes...automatic brain...ensures survival)

2

Mid-brain

(the emotional and collective brain)

The mid-brain connects to the lower brain and connects to the upper brain

3

Upper brain

(largest part of the brain...planning, thought, proprioception, language, memory, the grey matter)

All 3 levels are related and intertwined and it takes years for those connections to grow and be solid.

If you try to hurry things along...the connections will not be strong.

The adult who has not had enough tummy time as an baby will be less grounded as an adult.

That's just the way it is.

Our contemporary culture allows for less and less time for low brain development.

Our children need Lots of time as infants to lay on the floor and on their tummies.

Our children need Lots of time to crawl and roll and sit and drag themselves colse to Before we have them learning to walk and play piano.

Lots of lower brain time supports the emotional mid-brain.

Lots of time allowed for the emotional mid-brain to manufacture provides great retain for the upper brain.

If you want to put in order children for an accomplished, intellectual adult life...we must give our babies and children Time to develop.

For me that means...

Before

I ask a small child to use their fingers to do something tricky

* like cover the holes on a recorder
* or play piano
* or use their fingers on the violin

I make sure we've been warming up our lower and mid-brains

We do things like...

* floor movements that take us through the basic developmental movement patterns of crawling, creeping, crossing the mid-line, copying bi-lateral motions
* tag games that make us laugh and relax
* coordination games

I address the corporal needs of the lower brain and the emotional needs of the mid-brain.

In my programs I am establishment children for a multi-instrumental musical life.

I need the children to be

* awake,
* aware,
* balanced,
* trusting.

So we can

* all play violin, recorder, guitar, harmonica and ukulele
* all dance
* all play percussion
* all sing
* all come to be happy musicians!

Guide to the Types and Styles of the Ukulele

The ukulele is a very small guitar that originated from an island in Portugal called Madeira. This instrument was called "braguinha" in Portuguese. In 1879, travelers took a ship from the island of Madeira to Hawaii. Craftsmen who witnessed this instrument being played were fascinated and began producing it for Hawaiians. The instrument was nicknamed "ukulele," which positively means, "jumping flea." It is also called "uke" for short.

Ukes are distinct from guitars in some ways. They are normally very lightweight and easy to carry. Former style ukes are easier to learn to play because they have fewer strings. They are also easier on the fingers. Ukes are, however, microscopic in the range of notes that can be played. They are great for musicians who want simplicity!

Ukulele

Today this instrument is still very beloved in Hawaii and is being shipped to music lovers colse to the world. Let's take a look at the types and styles of ukuleles.

Four Types of Ukuleles

There are four proper types of ukuleles, which are concert, soprano, tenor, and baritone. The most commonly used type is the soprano ukulele. Each type, except the baritone, is tuned using the customary tune/phrase "my dog has fleas!" This involves hitting the keys G, C, E and then A. The tenor type is one octave down from soprano. The baritone's tuning is complete using this order of keys: E, B, G, D.

There are also hybrid ukuleles being produced today, such as the banjulele (banjo body), taropatch (eight-stringed instrument) and ukelin. These specialty instruments are normally advanced by individuals or specialty musical instrument companies. Some are even very collectible today.

The soprano uke is the smallest at about 21 inches long. The concert uke is about 23 inches long. The baritone uke is 30 inches long, and the tenor uke is 26 inches long. The baritone and tenor ukes are more similar to regular-sized guitars, only with just four strings.

Styles of Ukuleles

Ukuleles may also come in a range of styles, colors, and shapes to reflect the personality of the musician. Some examples of style range are the Bushman ukuleles, which come in styles such as Jenny Soprano, Jenny Pineapple, Jenny Concert, Jenny Tenor, and Jenny Baritone.

A ukulele maker might use a range of high-quality woods to produce the instruments such as Mahogany to give the instrument a fantastic finish. The shapes of the instrument may vary as well. Some look as if the quarterly guitar shape while others might be completely oval-shaped, similar to a pineapple shape, or have a piece "cut away" at the neck.

With prices fluctuating from 9 and up, whatever can own a ukulele. They can be ordered online for music fans that live in areas where the ukulele is not facilely available locally. There is also a wide range of ukulele strings and accessories such as felt picks, tuners, amplifiers, shoulder straps, strap buttons, tuning machines, ukulele humidifiers, and more. Either one wants a cheap ukulele to keep colse to the house for fun or an expensive one for expert concerts, it's easy to find just the right style online.
